Eat, learn, succeed!

That’s what student nutrition programs in Northumberland County are all about.

Hi! My name is Beth Kolisnyk and I am the Community Development Coordinator for Northumberland Food for Thought.

Last year close to 6000 students in Northumberland County benefited from a breakfast, lunch, or snack program at school. These programs are open to all and promote healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime.

– Local Credit Union Kicks in Support Again For Student Nutrition Programs in the Area –

(NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY) – Credit a local financial institution for being consistent with its support of student nutrition programs in the area.

A $2,000 donation from Kawartha Credit Union’s Cobourg Branch will help student nutrition programs with food purchases, or to upgrade equipment and appliances.Kawartha Credit Union is no stranger to assisting programs that help to ensure local students have the food they need to learn in school. Since 2005, it has donated a total of $14,800 to support the work of Northumberland Food For Thought (NFFT), the non-profit partnership that co-ordinates student nutrition programs in Northumberland County.

“Through our Community Involvement Program, Kawartha strives to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. To date, we have donated over $1.5 million to causes that matter most to our members, and Northumberland Food For Thought is one of these,” says Dana Farrell, Cobourg Branch Manager.

“We appreciate the continuing generosity of Kawartha Credit Union as one of our most consistent financial supporters over the years,” says Susan Greenwood, Community Development Co-ordinator with NFFT. “Without these donations, area students would not have the food they need to succeed in school.”

Northumberland Food For Thought helps to coordinate 38 student nutrition programs at local schools. Its programs can vary from a full sit-down breakfast before class to others featuring snack bins delivered to classrooms from which students can choose something to eat. Whatever form it takes, the goal of the nutrition program is to ensure students have enough to eat to learn in school. All programs are free, and open to any student who wants to take part.

With the start of school only a month away, Greenwood notes there are many options for people who want to support NFFT. Volunteers are always needed to help prepare and serve food at student nutrition programs, and financial donations from individuals and businesses are also welcomed, she adds.
